The Canary Islands are a Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean just 100 kilometres west of Morocco. The eight main islands are (from largest to smallest) Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Graciosa. There are other smaller islands and islets: Alegranza, Isla de Lobos, Montaña Clara, Roque del Oeste and Roque del Este.

The archipelago's beaches, climate and natural attractions make the Canaries a major tourist destination with over 12 million visitors per year. The islands have a subtropical climate, with long hot summers and moderately warm winters, influenced by the sea and the trade winds. The precipitation levels and the level of maritime moderation vary depending on location and elevation. Green areas in the middle of mountanious islands as well as desert exist on the archipelago.
