California is one of the largest U.S. states with 423,970 km2. If it were a country, California would be the fifth-largest economy in the world. It extends between the Pacific Ocean (with a coastline more than 1,350 km long) and the Sierra Nevada mountain range in the east and the Mojave Desert in the southeast. California shares internal borders with Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, and Mexico to the south.
Much of the coast and the central valley has a Mediterran climate, with hot dry summers and mild, rainy winters. Northern California and the mountains have snow in winter, while the deserts experience very hot summers and mild winters. The highest temperature in the world (56.7ºC) was recorded in Death Valley.
California is undoubtedly one of the most renowed destinations in the world. Nowadays tourism has become a multibilion-dollar industry with a significant impact on the state's economy. After all, Los Angeles and San Francisco are always on top positions in the ranks of global cities. National parks like Yosemite or Death Valley are a magnet for nature lovers. But of course, the image of California that first come to our minds are probably those long sandy beaches full of people in a sunny day.
