Bordeira

This is a long beach included in thSouth West Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, in an area popular with surfers, but far from mass tourist resorts. Sand dunes, limestone cliffs and even a river separate Bordeira beach from the nearest villages.

How to get there

The beach is near Carrapateira. To get there you have to follow the road N120 that links Sines with Lagos. 5 km south of Aljezur, take road N268 towards Sagres. Pass the village of Bordeira, and 4 km later take a detour on your right and follow Estrada da Praia for approximately 1 km until you get to a large unpaved parking area. If you arrive from the south, this road is only 500 m after Carrapateira.

To get to the beach you still have to wade through the ankle-high water of Carrapateira river.
It is also possible to continue by car 1 km more and park on top of the cliff on the south end of the beach, use the wooden stairs and then cross the river.

The beach

It is approximately 3 km long, with two different sections. The south end (where the parking areas are) is very wide. The first 700 m of the beach are aproximately 400 m wide between the sea and the river.
As you move northbound, you initially find sand dunes that are later replaced by rocks and finally the low cliffs. Here the width is only 30 m, but this part of the beach extends for 2 more kilometres.
This part of the Portuguese coast is well known for surfing conditions, so you should expect high waves and strong wind.

Facilities

There are some bars and restaurants in the road next to the parking lot, but the beach itself is quite an unspoilt area. Lifeguards only operate in the south end.

Nudism

This is not an official nude beach, but nudism is tolerated on the north half of the beach, not in the wider section. Bordeira is so large that it's never crowded, and the northern end can be considered virtually deserted.

I like:
  • Very long, quiet beach
I don't like:
  • Not an easy walk from the car to the beach

I have dedicated most of my free time in the last years to discover the world, and beaches offer some of the most stunning landscapes on Earth. The next step was to enjoy them as naturally as possible, which obviously mean without clothes. Now I think it is time for me to share this liberating experience and try to help others to discover it.
