Near Bilbao, beaches and cliffs alternate along Biscay coast in a natural environment. Gorrondatxe is the first one. Long, quiet, and with a particular grassy area between the sand and the cliff.

How to get there

From Bilbao, road BI-634 leads to the villages of the right bank of the estuary. Once in Berango there are several alternative ways that pass under the railway line to reach the street Zientoetxe Errepidea, quite long and uphill and leads almost to the small parking lot that serves the beach. From here there are still about 300 m that can only be done on foot or by bike. The final section has a steep slope. It is a paved road, very easy to go down, but the way back is hard (especially for those on bike).
Another way is to walk from Barinatxe. From the parking lot of this beach there is a path that leads to the left along the cliff. After a short climb you can see Gorrondatxe.
There is another small path down the other end of the beach. Very narrow, it is difficult and perhaps even dangerous. It is not recommended for everyone, especially when there are other much better ways.

The beach

It is rather peculiar, especially the grass area behind the beach itself. This is a petrified dune that defines three zones: the sand, the edge of the dune (formed by a series of stone terraces), and the top covered with grass.
The sand is golden, fine-grained, with only stones or rocks on the west end. At high tide, this area is very narrow, virtually reduced to the eastern half, which is considerably wider.
The edge of the dune is hard, like flat stones. However has the advantage of offering wind protection (and privacy if that's what you want).
The grass area is much wider. Small mounds and some plants also protect from the wind, but overall is fairly flat and exposed.
In the end, almost at the foot of the cliff, there is a protected area where the original vegetation is recovering.

There is a bar at the parking place on top of the cliffs. Nice place to stop when you leave the beach.

Nudism is practiced on the left half of the beach. Just 100 m away from the access ramp you can find the first naked people. Furhter on the ratio increases, but there is always a mix of nudists and textiles.

Other nude beaches in the area

I like:
  • A different beach, you can choose between sand or grass
I don't like:
  • Very narrow at high tide

I have dedicated most of my free time in the last years to discover the world, and beaches offer some of the most stunning landscapes on Earth. The next step was to enjoy them as naturally as possible, which obviously mean without clothes. Now I think it is time for me to share this liberating experience and try to help others to discover it.
