Praia da Santa

Not that the beaches in Vila do Bispo are usually overcrowded, or that the area has been spoilt by large tourist resorts like other towns in Algarve, but if you really want a secret beach, a place to be alone and far from any sign of urban development, then you should visit Praia da Santa (warning: it's not easy to find)

Last visited: april 2015

How to get there

You can get to Praia da Santa on foot from Salema. From Lagos or Vila do Bispo take road N125. In the roundabout between these two towns take the exit to Salema (M537). The road goes down to the centre of Salema, next to the beach. Don't stop there. Cross a little bridge, drive up to the highest part of the town and park as far as you can.
There you will see an unpaved path that goes through the trees to the edge of the cliff. Continue along it, even if sometimes it's not easy to follow. At a certain point you start going down into a ravine. Follow the path on your left and you will soon reach the beach.

It should also possible to walk from the parking to Figueira beach, but I have never tried this way.

The beach

At low tide Praia da Santa can be as long as 100 m, but only half of this at high tide. The width is also very variable. Apart from the rocks fallen from the cliffs, this is a sandy beach, quite flat even under the water.
Except for the ravine used to access the beach, it is surrounded by vertical walls where you may try to find dinosaur footprints (I couldn't). On the base of the back wall there is a cave, 20 m wide but not very deep. Enough, nevertheless, to provide some shade when it's needed.

There isn't anything at all here. You have to take everything with you.

Praia da Santa is so difficult to find that chances are that you are the only person there, so you are free to decide for yourself if you want to keep your clothes on or not. I did so when I visited it and nobody else appeared.
I have never found a reference to it as a nude beach, and in fact I have only find one link to it (see below), and it doesn't says anything about nudism. But I have seen a few naked people on some of the few pics I have been able to find on the internet. Nudism is tolerated in several remote beaches in this area, so I imagine it may also be here. Nevertheless, please apply your best judgement.

Other nude beaches in the area

I like:
  • The solitude
  • The cave
I don't like:
  • Difficult to find

I have dedicated most of my free time in the last years to discover the world, and beaches offer some of the most stunning landscapes on Earth. The next step was to enjoy them as naturally as possible, which obviously mean without clothes. Now I think it is time for me to share this liberating experience and try to help others to discover it.
