Canavial

It is only metres away from a residential area in Lagos, one of the most populated towns in Algarve, but the beach can not be seen due to the vertical cliffs. To get there you have to use the 200 steps carved on the rock, as it is common in this region. Nudism is allowed in a section of this beach.

How to get there

When you reach Lagos, follow initially the signs to the beaches and Ponta da Piedade, but then keep on the main road until you see a sign to Canavial and then turn left. In the residential area, look for Rua do Canavial and follow it towards the sea. At the end there is a small parking area.
An easier option is to park near the lighthouse in Ponta da Piedade and walk along the edge of the cliffs. It will take you some time, mainly because you will have to stop several times to admire the stunning coast.
The stairs to the beach start in an area with trees. There are 180 steps, most of them in a good condition, but a few steps have been shifted or have disappeared.

The beach

It is made of fine golden sand, with some rocks on both ends. It is absolutely flat except for the step created by tides, and it is completely surrounded by espectacular vertical reddish cliffs.
The beach is 200 m long and just a few metres wide at high tide. Depending on the tide you can reach a secluded cove behind the left end, and even another tiny one. Be careful, you might get trapped there, but the walk is worth if only to see the huge rocky columns coming out of the sea.

Facilities

In spite of being located in a urban area, there isn't any facility around, not even a bar on top of the cliffs.

Nudism

This is not an official nude beach, but it is common here. The nudist section is the left half of the beach, behind a group of rocks. I don't know the nudist/textile ratio in summertime, but in spring it was approximately 50%-50% (more people in the nudist part, but not all of them naked). We were very few people when I visited Canavial, but textiles weren't concerned by having nudists around.

Other nude beaches in the area

  • Beliche
  • Figueira
  • Zavial
I like:
  • You don't need a car to get to the beach from Lagos
  • Spectacular coastal landscape
I don't like:

  • It's difficult to be sure where you can or can not be nude

Author & Editor

I have dedicated most of my free time in the last years to discover the world, and beaches offer some of the most stunning landscapes on Earth. The next step was to enjoy them as naturally as possible, which obviously mean without clothes. Now I think it is time for me to share this liberating experience and try to help others to discover it.
