We all know how difficult may be sometimes to get to a nude beach. Whatever the reason (privacy, local opposition, remote area...), its location seems to be a secret. It would not be the first time that I try to go to a new beach and have to return home without having found it.

Of course, there are plenty of resources on the internet for those who are planning a visit to a nude beach. This website, for example. However, sometimes it is not enough to get all the information at home. You need it right there, to be sure that this narrow road is the one that leads to the beach, or that the stairs are behind that house.

Fortunately, in our uber-connected world we can rely on our portable devices (provided there is phone coverage). I have recently discovered a very useful mobile app named Nudist Compass.

It provides a map with the detailed location of an impressive number of nudist places (mainly beaches) all around the world. Maps use Google Maps technology, so you can jump from satellite to roadmap views. By default it displays the places around your current location, but you can select any other position in the map and it will display the beaches in that area. Tapping on them you can read a short description and have a look to a closer map of the beach itself and where to park. Combined with your GPS it can show you the route there.

What makes so interesting Nudist Compass are not the navigation capabilities, but the large database of beaches. Information is taken from reliable websites like Naked Places or Captain Barefoot (and references are properly atributed, good for the authors!), which means for me a guarantee of accuracy, both the GPS coordinates and the descriptions.

Does this means that every nude beach in the world is included in Nudist Compass? No, of course. The problem, as usual, happens to be the criteria to define what is a nude beach. You have the option to show only the "verified" or "all" beaches, but even with the most comprehensive option there are many beaches not listed in this app.

Lest check it with the beaches in this site. Up to now we have writen about 109 nude beaches in 7 countries, which I can classify into
1. Official or traditional nude beaches, where at least a remarkable part of beachgoers are nudists
2. Tolerated, but non traditional nude beaches, with a small rate of nudists
3. Little coves that only appear on the most detailed beach lists

I have searched all of them on Nudist Compass, with this result:

Total
Listed
Official/Traditional
67
60
Non traditional
32
13
Little coves
10
3

According to these figures, 90% of the official/traditional beaches are listed in the app. Sometimes the detailed map is missing or the description is common to several beaches in the same area, but nevertheless information is helpful. The situation changes for the other two categories. Only a fraction of those beaches is included in the app, which is not a surprise for me. In the case of little coves, the reason is obvious: some of them are very difficult to reach, disappear at high tide or are only known by locals. So, I can't blame Nudist Compass for not including them.

And it is even trickier for the non-traditional: Should it suggest a beach like Playa Pilar, in Cuba, where nudism is in practice tolerated but officially forbidden? Or one like Las Coloradas, in Lanzarote, where chances to meet another nudist are very low? The answer is up to you. Maybe Nudist Compass could include a new get-nude-at-your-own-risk category, but  it is understandable that they don't do it.

Nevertheless, the app gives you the posibility to suggest new beaches, so with the help of users it can enlarge its database. In fact, there already are some examples of user-added beaches, and it's quite easy to add a new one. You just have to mark the position in the map, give it a name and write a description of the place.

Nudist Compass also has a social component. You can register and show the beaches where you have been (otherwise you will appear as "anonymous"), you can look for other people in your area, and you can even send them messages. It may be an interesting feature with a larger number of users, but not nowadays, at least in my location. The closest user I have ever found was hundreds of kilometres away from me!

You don't even have to worry about the price. Nudist Compass is completely free, and it doesn't even show you annoying ads. There is a "donate" button in the webpage so that you contribute to develop the 2.0 version, and that's all.

As you can see, I could not find any negative point on Nudist Compass. It's free, reliable and useful. The more users and the more support we give to the people in that.beyond, the more improvements we could expect in future versions.

To the surprise of unsuspecting tourists in the heart of Berlin, there is a corner in this public park where you can enjoy German summer without clothes only a few meters from the parliament or the presidency of the government. The most central, but just one of the many nudist places in Berlin.
