Cala del Lance / Cala Grande

This beach is sometimes called Cala del Lance, others Cala Grande, and even the smaller section is sometimes given its own name: Cala del Barranco. Regardless the name, only those who don't fear a long rough path under the sun will discover the amazing basalt columns in the cliffs and strange rocky formations that clearly show the volcanic origin of Cabo de Gata.

Cala del Lance, nude beach in Cabo de Gata (Almeria, Spain)

How to get there

You can only arrive here on foot from the car parks at Los Genoveses or Barronal beaches. The second on is the best option (you have to walk less).
From San Jose, follow the unpaved road for 4 km. In summertime, you have to pay to park (5€), and these places get full early in the morning. At that moment the road is closed, but there is a bus connecting the town with the main three beaches (Genoveses, Barronal and Monsul).
At Barronal, park on the road side (only in the authorized areas), and walk to the beach. Then, go to the left end and walk to the top of the cliff. Continue along the narrow path that follows the cliffs' edge until you see Cala del Lance. The way down is quite step and some parts are not too easy to find. Not suitable for everybody.

The beach

Aproximately 200 m long, the beach is divided into two sections. You arrive there from the right side. There is a sandy part almost disappear at high tide, behind it, pebles mixed with some plants, and then the cliffs. They are vertical on both ends and in the center while in the rest of the beach there is a more or less steep slope.
In the central part there are a few coves. Some of them seem to be occupied by people living there, but others are empty. They offer the only shadow you will find in Cala Grande.
But the most distinctive feature is the rock that divides the beach. It is made by black vertical hexagonal basaltic rocks (like the ones in the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland). You can also find these formations in other parts of the cliffs, but no so clearly as in this rocks.
Given the difficult access, you can imagine that few people come here. Like many other coves in this area, is the perfect spot for those looking for a relaxed ambience. Maybe during summertime more people arrive by boat, but out of the peak season, the beach can be almost entirely for you.

Nothing at all here. This is a Natural Park, and the best example of an unspoilt area.

Feel free to undress. Probably most of the people here will be nude, but there isn't any rule about it. Nudism is tolerated in all the secluded beaches of this area, but naturists and textiles mingle in all beaches in different ratios (it is heavily dependent on the number of people).

Other nude beaches in the area

I like:
  • Hidden beach in a virgin area.
I don't like:
  • Difficult path to the beach

I have dedicated most of my free time in the last years to discover the world, and beaches offer some of the most stunning landscapes on Earth. The next step was to enjoy them as naturally as possible, which obviously mean without clothes. Now I think it is time for me to share this liberating experience and try to help others to discover it.
