There are several nude beaches around Bilbao. Some of them are long and sandy, have good access and can host lots of people. Other not. Barrika belongs to the second group, but it is the best in this category. Long but easy access, uncomfortable peebles but plenty of space for sunbathing. The inconveniencies are compensated by the beautiful rocky shoreline.

How to get there

From Bilbao, take road BI-637 to Getxo and Sopelana. Continue after this town towards Barrika, and a couple of kilometres later you can see on your left a picnic area with a large car park. Walk then to the edge of the cliff. From there you have a magnificent view of the coast line. The stairs to the beach start on the left corner. More than 300 steps, the way back is easy, but very tiring.
When you reach the bottom of the cliff you still have to walk for 200 m through the rocks. The particular geology of this section of the basque coast creates some kind of parallel lines that you have to pass over. Again, not so difficult, but tiring.

The beach

The first section is 200 m long and 20 m wide. It is made of pebbles in different sizes, with just a few sandy patches and a group of rocks in the middle.
To the west, the beach seems to end into a section with large rocks, but it continues behind them with another section similar to the first one but slightly smaller.
It is not easy to go for a swim since the lines of rocks continue here into the water. The beach is totally open to the ocean, which in the north of Spain usually means strong waves. You have to be careful.

There is a summer restaurant by the car park. Nothing in the beach itself.

Nudists and textiles share this beach, with a larger number of clothed people. Although it can probably be practiced in all the beach, nudism is more common on the second half of the main beach, and specially in the section behind the rocks. However, I have also seen some naked people lying on the rocks at the foot of the stairs.

Other nude beaches in the area

  • Gorrondatxe
  • Barinatxe
  • Meñakoz
  • Matxilando
  • Muriola / La Cantera

I like:
  • Large car park and well-maintained access
  • Beautiful natural environment
I don't like:
  • Swimming is difficult
  • Uncomfortable peebles

I have dedicated most of my free time in the last years to discover the world, and beaches offer some of the most stunning landscapes on Earth. The next step was to enjoy them as naturally as possible, which obviously mean without clothes. Now I think it is time for me to share this liberating experience and try to help others to discover it.
