Valdearenas - Liencres dunes

Valdearenas beach is part of the Liencres Dunes Nature Park, where the beaches, the dunes, the river and the pine forest are different sections of a single ecosystem. Valdearenas is the largest beach, and sometimes this name is given to all of them. It stretches between the dunes and the sea. To the east, it continues into Canavalle beach, while Ria de Mogro beach is on the other side of the dunes, facing the estuary of river Pas.

How to get there
From the motorway A-67 that links Santander and Torrelavega, take the exit to Boo de Pielagos, cross the town and follow the road to Liencres. Before it, take the road on your left, which crosses a pine forest towards the beach. There is a parking lot at the beginning of the road, under the trees, and another larger one just besides the beach. From the last one, you can take the path on the right to Canavalle beach, or the one on the lerft to Valdearenas.

The beach
A huge beach with an easy road and a large parking lot, and close to the city of Santander, it is logical that thousands of sunbathers come here on summertime. However, you can find yourself in an almost deserted beach if you walk away. The dunes start in the parking lot and extend for 2 km to the west, where river Pas meets the sea. In fact, the pine forest was planted in the XXth century to stop the movement of the dunes, buy in the other end there are only a few bushes.
The beach is not only very long, but also quite wide even at high tide. Much more when it is low. However, from the other side of the dunes it is very narrow.
The only drawback are the wind and the waves, unless you like water sports. Swimming out of the area monitored by lifeguards is dangerous. In the river you don't have waves, of course, but the problem is the muddy surface at low tide, where walking to the water is difficult.

On both sides of the parking lot there are several restaurants, showers, first-aid posts... everything you can need appart from sunbeds or umbrellas (you will find it very seldom on the cantabrian coast). Out of this central section, lifeguards only go on quad periodically.

In Valdearenas, the dunes are the only nudist area, if you can call "nudist" a place where you have to be hidden to sunbathe in the nude. Rarely a person dares to do on the beach, close to the dunes, and it is even more strange going for a skinny dip. However, the last kilometer is usually deserted, with only a few people walking along the shore. Personally I don't like this hidden nudism. Moreover, the dunes are a protected area, with a fence that reminds people they only should be crossed through the marked path to conservate this sensitive area.

I like:
  • The stunning views from the road
 I don't like:
  • Nudism restricted to the dunes

I have dedicated most of my free time in the last years to discover the world, and beaches offer some of the most stunning landscapes on Earth. The next step was to enjoy them as naturally as possible, which obviously mean without clothes. Now I think it is time for me to share this liberating experience and try to help others to discover it.
